Canopy
photobook, 2023Traversing through archival imagery obtained and images produced during trips back to the artist’s ancestral hometown in Klang, Malaysia, Canopy is a project that attempts to engage in an act of postmemory to re-excavate family histories now inaccessible and alien. Using a search for traces left behind by the artist’s grandfather as a starting point, the book seeks access to these histories of home through the replication of a touristic gaze observed in images left behind, constructing imaginary narratives and parallels out of shared observations - altogether examining the impossibility and unreliability of reconstructing histories through photographs left behind.
