Miracle Shopping

An imagined tongue-in-cheek day of the life of Donpen, the mascot of Japanese supermarket franchise Don Quijote. As a positive icon of speed and commercial appeal – low prices, variety in product, and a good dose of chaotic fun – Donpen adopts an infinite array of forms in the store’s its chaotic signage. If one was to give Donpen realistic human qualities, a day in Donpen’s life necessitates examining its nature: as a chameleonic mascot working in a 24-hour store pushing for an endless sale, its motivations and desires trapped to the signs he inhabits and observes, while also restricted to his own mall. Creating an imaginary narrative of pursuit through sequencing signs and “observations”, Miracle Shopping satirically comments on capitalistic positivity via Donpen as a vessel.
